“He admits to being a compulsive liar”

My partner has admitted he has a problem with being a compulsive liar to stay out of trouble or to avoid conflict. Instead of dealing with the real problem he will lie his way out of it.

He has even stated that he would rather leave me then be honest with me. So I would like to know – how do I help him overcome this behaviour without pushing him away?

Now I understand him admitting it is the first step but does he believe it himself, or is it another lie in a plead to get me to feel sorry for him and an excuse for him to behave in such a way?
